DirectX 12 promises both dramatically increased performance in games, thanks to reduced CPU overhead and better support for multithreading, and significantly reduced power consumption, a real boon for owners of gaming laptops. It will of course be built into Windows 10 and compatible with Windows 8 as well, but the news isn't so good for Windows 7 diehards.
Speaking at a PDXLAN presentation earlier this month, AMD's Chief Gaming Scientist Richard Huddy said Windows 7 remains Microsoft's most popular operating system: 52 percent of all Microsoft OS users are still on Windows 7, and that number is actually growing. "It's a very, very popular operating system," he said in comments starting around the 20:30 mark of the video.

DirectX 12 will make it easy to treat multiple GPUs as as ingle entity

A fan then asked him whether his setup was close to Xbox One hardware to which he replied that it was way beyond console stuff. We have no information regarding the specific GPUs used in the crossfire setup, but we are aware that DirectX 12 will further improve performance on multi – GPU setups.

AMD is a company that is known for being one of the top dogs in creating video card technology. They continually do battle with Nvidia, who proves to be quite a rival in the veritable arms race of computing technology. Their competition is good for us, though, as it ensures we get the best product for a somewhat decent price.

One of the biggest changes coming thanks to DirectX 12 will be the eventual ability to combine multiple GPUs to boost PC performance.
AnandTech reports "DirectX 12’s explicit controls extend to multi-GPU rendering as well. It is now up to developers to decide if they want to use multiple GPUs and how they want to use them. And with explicit control over the GPUs along with the deep understanding that only a game’s developer can have for the layout of their rendering pipeline, DirectX 12 gives developers the freedom to do things that could never be done before."
The example given is the Star Swarm demo from developer Oxide Games, ahead of its full retail release in 2016 as Ashes of the Singularity. Oxide has taken the underlying Nitrous engine and using it as a testbed for DirectX 12 technologies to make a new build of the game.
