Why Valve Refuses to Put Ads on Steam

Be it online, in-game, or somewhere inbetween, ads are a hot topic in the games community, particularly how much they are not wanted. One place you won't be seeing them any time in the future, though, is Steam. In fact, Valve's Erik Johnson believes that while it would boost revenue, implementing ads in the Steam PC storefront would be detrimental to the whole platform.
"We don't see a case for that ever getting user value," Johnson said in a GameSpot interview. "I don't think that those ever work, either." Johnson went on to say that "it would be a bad business decision, let alone just dumb" to introduce ads to the storefront, believing it would ruin their customers' experience. This customer-oriented approach seems in-line with other recent company moves, such as Valve's promise to refund any games purchased on Steam.

Steam's Holiday Sales Won't Have Daily Deals; One Discount For Whole Period

This holiday’s upcoming Steam sales are going to be different, and we think you will be happy with the changes.
Valve has revealed in advance that there are two big sales on schedule. This month will have the Black Friday/Exploration sale on November 25, 10 AM PST, to December 1, 10 AM PST. After that, there will be the Holiday sale, from December 22nd 10AM PST, to Jan 4th 10AM PST.
Valve has made arrangements with developers to have only one discount for individual games, to run the length of the sale. They have explained that this will allow developers to get as many sales as possible, and it will also allow them to get the word out on their sales as effectively as possible.

Steam Registered An Xbox Subdomain, And We Don't Know Why - Yet

A fan has made an interesting discovery; Steam has registered some Xbox subdomains.
These subdomains include the very clearly Xbox related xbox.steamgames.com and xbox.steampowered.com. Our source can only speculate on what these domains are for, if they are planned to be used at all.
Reddit is sharing their theories on what this could possibly mean. Yvese believes this will allow Xbox account owners to connect their accounts to Steam. This is the top comment on the thread, and for good reason. Valve made such arrangements with the release of Portal 2 in 2011 on Steam and PlayStation 3. Portal 2 remains the only Steam game connected to a console, offering features like cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, Steam achievements, and even Steam Cloud save.

Steam Changes To Bundles, Trading Explained

We’ve all been there: a Steam sale promises a tantalizing bundle deal, packed with games you long to play but haven’t had the budget for, all for an affordable price. But wait, you have one of the games in that bundle, rendering that all-too-tempting price drop a little less sweet. What to do? Well, it looks like Valve is addressing that problem.
In a document recently distributed to developers and obtained by PCGamesN, Valve has laid out plans to change how they handle trading and security in their digital distribution platform, Steam. Additionally it seems they are also altering how they sell game bundles to adapt to player needs.
For game bundles, Valve is changing the system so that if you buy a bundle which already has games you already own, those games will be removed from your purchase, and the price will be adjusted appropriately. Valve says they want customers to not feel cheated or pass on bundles that have some games they want, and games they already own. As the document states:

“Past Complete Packs were sometimes a bad deal for customers that already [owned] one or more of the products in the pack. Either it made bad economic sense for those customers to purchase the pack, or they just felt bad about doing so since it [looked] like they were paying for products they already [had]. The new Steam Bundles system addresses this.”

While not all of Steam’s 125+ million active users participate in service’s popular card trading feature, just last December Valve revealed rampant identity theft done for trading to the scale of 77,000 users a month.
