Video game developer BioWare has announced that it was working with Dark Horse in order to launch a comic book series based on the Dragon Age universe, which will appear on a bi-weekly basis for three months during early 2012.

Mike Laidlaw made the reveal at the New York Comic Con event and says that each issue will have 12 pages and that it will only be launched in digital format, with each of the issues costing 99 cents on the iOS app that Dark Horse maintains.

David Gaider, who is the BioWare writer involved in both Dragon Age video games until now, will write the new comic series and will be centered on three characters: Alistair, the Templar from Origins who goes on to rule the land, Varric, the lying dwarf that tells the story of Dragon Age 2, and Isabella, the pirate which appears in both games and plays a pivotal role in the second one.

It seems that some backstory will also be offered in the comic book, talking about the rise of dragons in the land of Thedas.

Gaider will share writing credits with Alexander Freed and Chad Hardin, who's past writing experience includes work on Superman, Batman and Zatanna.

When speaking about the comic book David Gaider also suggested that the canonical ending of Dragon Age: Origins was the one which saw Alistair on the throne of Ferelden, which probably means that the player character has accepted the deal offered by the witch Morrigan, which includes the creation of a child that has the soul of one of the Old Gods.

This might have long lasting effects on the game universe and on the possible plot of Dragon Age 3, which is rumored to bring together the heroes of the two previous games, the Warden and Hawke.

No official information has yet been made about the third game in the Dragon Age series.
