Oficial, Team Asobi e acum studio PlayStation:

[...] Today, we have colorful news coming to you from Team Asobi, the Tokyo-based PlayStation studio responsible for the Astro Bot series.

Following the release of Astro’s Playroom for PlayStation 5, Team Asobi is now spreading its wings and growing bigger! This is a very exciting time for the team, and we are very much looking forward to this next chapter. We wanted to take this chance to thank all of you, the PlayStation fans, for your kind words of support over the years, especially since Astro made its big debut on PlayStation 5 alongside the DualSense wireless controller.

While we are growing and challenging bigger things, our mission at heart remains the same as ever: bring you PlayStation magic, innovation and put smiles on your faces with fun, colorful games for all ages.

To go alongside this news, we are proud to show our new logo which you will see in our future productions. We took inspiration from what Team Asobi meant to us. Some of the old-timers might recognize other influences from the PlayStation early days as well!

[...] The team was first assembled in 2012, a bit more than a year before the launch of PS4. Back then, a handful of us were working away on tech demos showcasing what the new hardware could do. We sat down one day and decided we needed a name for our team; something that would work as a reminder to us of what we believed to be the most important part in any video game: great gameplay and that second-to-second enjoyment it can provide!

In Japanese language, the word “Asobu” literally means “To Play” and so we settled on “Asobi “. Those simple five letters were a surprisingly fitting name with a good sound to it and it stuck!

Fast-forward a few years, the team is still expanding, we launched Astro Bot: Rescue Mission in 2018 and Astro’s Playroom for PS5 in 2020. And now, Team Asobi has become the newest internal studio within the PlayStation Studios family. At the heart, our philosophy revolves around that quintessential joy in play, be it through pixel-precise character controls, exploiting a cool new controller in surprising ways or packing humorous animations in every nook and cranny, this is the stuff that excites us

So, who are the Asobis then? Well, since we are a PlayStation game development studio located in the cool and vibrant Tokyo, the majority of the team are Japanese. We also have several members coming from various other countries: England, Germany, France, Scotland, Korea, Spain, and Colombia. It’s important for us to have this mixed background to help us create games that are universal. And of course, we all share that same love for Japan: its craft, its pop culture, its gaming heritage but also its beautiful seasons, wacky innovations (so many!!) and delicious food!

Technology has also been a defining factor for Team Asobi. Many Asobis have a real love affair with tech but we also realize that technology in itself is only the starting point. It then needs to be turned into something magical and awe-inspiring to be really meaningful. In that respect, working with the DualSense controller as of late has been great fun and we are continuing to enjoy experimenting with it at this very moment. But shhh it’s a secret!

Finally, we inspire from crafted video games and all of Team Asobi members are keen gamers. We love all types of games including, of course, platformers that deliver that second-to-second joy where every single successful jump you make is a mini story in itself. [...]

Yesterday, PlayStation let slip that some more of its upcoming PS5 games will also be launching on PS4.

Joining Horizon: Forbidden West will be the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7. The internet is unhappy about it. There's this notion that if a new generation game is playable on an older console, then it's not truly a new generation game. It's a belief that was somewhat referenced by PlayStation chief Jim Ryan, who said that it was time to give customers something new "that can only be enjoyed on PS5," responding to Xbox's strategy of making games cross-generational.

To begin with, I've never been overly convinced by the idea that taking a PS5 game to PS4 makes it any less a PS5 game. Gran Turismo 7 will, I'm sure, make use of all the fancy PS5 bells and whistles. We've just had an entire generation where certain developers ported their Xbox One and PS4 games to Nintendo Switch, and nobody suggested that made them any less Xbox One and PS4 titles. I understand that some games -- such as next week's Ratchet & Clank game -- will make such good use of PS5 tech that it's impossible (or at least very difficult) to get it running on PS4, but that won't be true of all games.

Leaving that argument aside, Sony's decision to actively support PS4 seems to contradict its original plan to upgrade customers quickly to PS5. What better reason not to upgrade than the fact most of the new games are available on your existing machine? But the games industry has changed significantly since that was the vision, and Sony is wise to keep supporting its older machine.

In its most recent investor presentation, Sony said it wants PS4 to have its 'strongest ever tail', which when you consider they were still making FIFA games for PS2 right up until 2013, is quite a statement. Sony even expects 70% of PlayStation Store revenue to come from PS4 this year. Its older console and its 110 million install base is big business.

But beyond that, PS4 is being played more than it ever was. During the pandemic, Sony saw new customers come into the market and lapsed gamers turn on their console again. Suddenly, the firm has a huge new audience to speak to. You can't expect that new group of gamers to jump to PS5 straight away. So it's now on Sony to keep that audience engaged with its older platform so that, one day in the future, they do transition to the new one.

There are lots of ways it can do that, including PS Plus activity, focusing on service-based games, and deals on some of its bigger titles. But the best way to keep an audience engaged is to give them new things to play. And if Sony has some big games it can get running on PS4, then it would be foolish not to. In fact, as the industry works out how to keep hold of these new customers once the pandemic is over, it's imperative that Sony keeps bringing games to PS4 in the near term.

Speaking at the launch of PS5 last year, Jim Ryan told GamesIndustry.biz: "Obviously, our eyes and our horizons have lifted with regards to what's possible with that PS4 community [...] In 2021, 2022, that PS4 community will be the vast majority of people on PlayStations during that time. It is crucial that we keep them engaged and happy. And the last six months have demonstrated that we could do that to an extent that we didn't think possible when we were setting our minds pre-COVID."

Furthermore, although Sony has done an impressive job in terms of getting so many PS5 consoles to market, I have little doubt that it had originally hoped to deliver even more. The semi-conductor shortage is doing its best to slow down the generational transition, so once again, it's vital that PS4 owners are getting looked after. And then there's the economic fallout, which may impact some gamers' ability to upgrade to the newer device. Perhaps Sony always planned to release Gran Turismo 7 and the next God of War on PS4, but recent world events only cements that decision as the right one.

In reality, people will want the best version of these games. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is more popular on PS5 than PS4, and that will be true of Horizon: Frozen West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War. It's the difference between watching the new Marvel movie at the cinema compared to getting it on Disney Plus. The hardcore fans will want the big screen experience. But as the film industry also discovered during the pandemic, there's a huge opportunity in the TV space.

COVID-19 has changed things for the games industry. It's made things trickier, it's slowed things down, but it's also opened up the business to a whole host of new customers. And it's right for PlayStation, and indeed its competitors and partners, to adapt to this new reality.
It's vital Sony maintains its PlayStation 4 support /Opinion

There's nothing wrong with cross-generation games at all, in fact, especially if it means more people can play them at a time when new-gen systems are extremely difficult to get ahold of.

Instead, the concern is how this new revelation reflects on Sony's credibility, who spent much of 2020 making it very clear that those who made the day one investment in PS5 would be rewarded with exclusive software that harnessed the console's next-gen processing power. For proof, just look back to 12 months ago, when Sony president and CEO Jim Ryan was asked by Gamesindustry.biz whether PlayStation would follow in Xbox's footsteps, and make future exclusives available across all of its platforms.

"We have always said that we believe in generations," he answered, touting a line that many other Sony execs would repeat in the lead up to the PS5's launch. "We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features. [...] It is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."

Less than one year into the console's life cycle, and it feels like that list of software that "can really only be enjoyed on PS5" is getting shorter and shorter with every new PlayStation Blog post. Whether intentional or not, the impression given by this u-turn is one of deception, with many having bought into Sony's much-touted belief in generations, only to find themselves with an expensive next-gen console that no longer reflects that belief.

    Wrong platform

Sony's misleading PS5 marketing looks even less flattering when you compare it to what Xbox was saying around the same time. "Gaming is bigger than any one device," declared head of Xbox Phil Spencer, just one month after Ryan made the above comments.

"Gaming is about entertainment and community and diversion and learning new stories and new perspectives, and I find it completely counter to what gaming is about to say that part of that is to lock people away from being able to experience those games. Or to force someone to buy my specific device on the day that I want them to go buy it, in order to partake in what gaming is about."

Some may have found it disheartening to learn that games like Halo Infinite and Hellblade 2 would be launching on Xbox One in addition to the Xbox Series X/S, then, but at least you knew about it far in advance of the next-gen consoles' launch, and Microsoft's reason for doing so was always honest and understandable. Ryan, however, would go on to cast doubt on Spencer's expressed strategy, calling it "perfectly legitimate" but countering that Sony's "generation approach" was instead designed to "give gamers certainty that they're buying a true next-generation console."

And yet that sense of certainty is nowhere to be found, as PlayStation fans have had to learn about presumed PS5 games being cross-gen through offhand comments hidden deep within PlayStation blog posts, or amongst the small print at the end of a new trailer. Microsoft, on the other hand, has remained clear and consistent in its messaging right through to launch and well beyond it, confirming specific platforms for titles that are still years off from release.

It's not a good look for PlayStation, reinforcing an image of the company as aloof and out of touch with its fanbase, no doubt leaving some early adopters to wonder whether they should have invested so heavily on a PS5 at release. Indeed, the PS5 marks the first console era in which Sony has released cross-generational first-party exclusives, so the question has to be asked: why?

What's changed, and more importantly, why didn't PlayStation telegraph that change more transparently in the run-up to PS5? According to Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst, focusing on entirely next-gen exclusive games for its first-party lineup is simply "not very good business".

"You can’t build a community of over 110 million PS4 owners and then just walk away from it, right?", he said in a recent interview. "I think that’d be bad news for fans of PS4 [...] and if they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them." That may be true, but it doesn't explain why PlayStation was saying the exact opposite just 12 months ago, before it had sold millions of PS5 consoles on the promise of its "generational approach".

Some have speculated whether titles like God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 7 were originally planned as PS5 exclusives, only to pivot to cross-generational launches in light of the pandemic's impact on PS5 production, which is likely to limit availability well into 2022. If that is the case, then Sony should make that clear, apologising for the confusion, laying out its reasoning, and making the case for why that decision is the right one. It owes an explanation to its user base, at the very least.

    Future proof

To its credit, Hulst also confirmed that PlayStation Studios have over 25 titles currently in development, half of which are new IP, and presumably a similarly healthy number are next-gen targeted projects. And it's not like PS5 players have a complete dearth of games with which to showcase the console's features – Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will join Demon's Souls, Destruction AllStars, Returnal, and Astro's Playroom amongst its collection of exclusives when it launches later next week.

But that doesn't detract from the confusion and cynicism of Sony's messaging over the last year, where flip-flopping and obfuscation has undermined player's trust in the PlayStation brand, and what it actually stands for at this critical juncture in time. It doesn't matter what way it lands, but Sony needs to answer the following question definitively and publicly before it continues to erode that trust even further: does it believe in generations or not?
When did PlayStation stop believing in generations?

"Not the ps5 dream we were promised".

In cazul asta a fost marketing fals.

Trebuie acum sa cumpar neaparat Ghost of Tsushima sa il joc in 60fps.
