These gun are effectively ammo-free, as they house a block of metal that is then shaved to create a round about the size of a grain of sand. That round is then propelled at high velocity using the gun’s on-board mass effect field.

So essentially, what happens is the round is jettisoned at lethal speed using electrical propulsion, which in turn generates a ton of heat. Once the heat builds up too much, the gun can no longer fire, which is why you must collect thermal clips to cool each gun down.

This – rather worryingly – is pretty close to new innovations in future warfare. So called ‘Hypervelocity weapons’ are based on the same electromagnetic propulsion used in Mass Effect, and the most popular real-life equivalent is the Rail Gun.
