    Post WD Velociraptor RAID0 Review

    Pana nu demult eram complet convins impotriva unei solutii RAID0 pe calculator. Pe langa cresterea cu 50% a sansei de a pierde datele, viteza castigata si problemele cauzate de controllere RAID care de care mai obscure... nu atrageau deloc asupra unui astfel de setup.

    Insa dupa ceva timp de folosire a Raptor-ului de 74GB (10.000 RPM) de la Western Digital insa, m-am convins de fiabilitatea unui astfel de HDD, iar la urmatorul upgrade la versiunea de 150GB (unde s-a mai simtit o crestere de viteza) m-am convins sa trec pe RAID0, totodata folosind o solutie de backup pe un HDD extern (eSATA).

    De curand insa a fost lansat VelociRaptor, un HDD care pe mine m-a socat. Pe langa faptul ca este cu cel putin 30% mai rapid in toate testele, ca a fost scazut timpul de acces si trecut pe interfata SATA2... well, pe langa toate acestea, te uiti la el si te minunezi. Western Digital a schimbat complet "foaia", trecand la un HDD de 2.5" in loc de 3.5" cum sunt toate HDD-urile de desktop. Fanii laptop-urilor insa sa nu sara in sus de bucurie, intrucat HDD-ul este "sudat" intr-un cage de 3.5" care are si rol de radiator, functie pe care o rezolva cu brio.

    Temperaturile pentru un HDD de 10.000 RPM cum este Velociraptor pe mine m-au impresionat. Daca in acelasi sistem cu o temperatura ambianta de 30 grade, HDD-urile de 7200 RPM stateau "cuminti" la 40-41 grade, VelociRaptor-ul nici macar in full load nu l-am vazut sa depaseasca 34-35 grade.

    Trecand la setupul RAID0 pe un ICH9R (chipset X38), mi-am adus aminte si de greseala facuta pe vecihul setup RAIDO cu Raptor-urile de 150GB. Si aici o sa atrag atentia tuturor celor care instaleaza Intel Matrix Storage driver, ca dupa instalare, sa porneasca Intel Matrix Storage Console, si sa mearga in Array_0000 - Volumes - Volume0, sa dea click dreapta si "Enable Volume Write-Back Cache". In mod normal e o functie care putea fi activata si in Device Manager, insa dupa instalarea driverelor Intel, acel checkbox este dezactivat. Voi atasa mai jos ca sa vedeti si diferenta dintre WriteBack Cache ON si OFF.

    Singurul downside al achizitionarii unui astfel de HDD ar fi insa pretul. La aceeasi bani pentru cineva care pretuieste mai mult spatiul, ati putea sa achizitionati un HDD de 1TB si sa ramaneti si cu ceva banuti. Pretul unui VelociRaptor este insa mult mai ok decat al unui HDD SCSI/SAS de 10.000RPM, iar singurul HDD care sa-l intreaca in momentul de fata ar fi un HDD SSD. Din pacate, la un SSD care sa aiba 1ms (sau sub) timp de acces, platiti un pret de 3-4 ori mai mare, si veti avea spatiul de 3-4 ori mai mic. Asa ca pana se maturizeaza SSD-ul si vor scadea preturile la producerea lor, VelociRaptor mi se pare ca are cel mai bun ratio in clasa 'performance".
