60 FPS confirmed!

Horizon Forbidden West is confirmed to get a 60 FPS performance mode on the PS5. This is according to the devs who shared this info with the press.
In an interview with French YouTuber Julien Chièze, the devs have confirmed that the game will come with a 60 FPS performance mode. This will be the first time Horizon will be playable in 60 FPS aside from the PC version of the first game.

Horizon Forbidden West - PS4 and PS5 Differences Explained

development on Horizon Forbidden West has used the PS4 console, and so it’s designed with that hardware in mind. “A lot of the development has taken place on the PlayStation 4, and a lot of playtesting has been done on PlayStation 4,” said de Jonge. “So we are ensuring that owners of that console have a great experience and the game will look fantastic on that console.”

“For the PlayStation 5 we can go much further, of course,” he added. “Visually we can add a lot more detail. Graphically, the rendering technique for the underwater scenes is special for the PlayStation 5, it has extra details and extra systems, like the wave technique is better on that system.”

As well as improved water and environmental details, the PS5 version is able to make use of a cinematic-grade lighting system that the PS4 can only use in cutscenes. “The lighting on Aloy on PlayStation 5 has much more definition,” said de Jonge. “We use a special cinematic lighting rig, that on the PlayStation 4 is only used in cutscenes, because the game is not running and we have more processing power in those scenes. But with the PlayStation 5 we have plenty of processing power, so we can have that lighting rig always available, so she always looks great with that lighting setup travelling with her anywhere.”

Sony Corp. has delayed the upcoming PlayStation game Horizon Forbidden West to the first quarter of 2022, according to a person familiar with the matter. Previously it had been scheduled for release this holiday season.

Horizon Forbidden West is an open-world action-adventure game and the sequel to the critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn, which sold more than 10 million copies following its release in 2017. The sequel is planned for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.

The setback is the latest in a year that has been full of delays across the industry, including one of Sony’s other big PlayStation exclusives, the untitled sequel to 2018’s God of War. Covid-19 has caused production challenges, forcing developers to work from home for months, but the pandemic has also provided a cover for developers to bump games that were facing obstacles regardless.

In June, PlayStation Studio head Hermen Hulst said the game’s holiday release date was tentative. “For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season,” he said on the PlayStation blog. “But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.”

Sony didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. News of a possible Horizon delay was first mentioned by video game reporter Jeff Grubb on the podcast Giant Bomb.
