Always-On Retina Display

Apple Watch Series 5 features an innovative new display that allows the time and important information to remain visible at all times. Each watch face has been carefully optimized for the new display and to preserve battery life, the screen intelligently dims when a user’s wrist is down and returns to full brightness with a raise or a tap. Several advanced technologies work together to deliver this new feature, including the industry’s only low-temperature polysilicone and oxide display (LTPO), ultra-low power display driver, efficient power management integrated circuit and new ambient light sensor. This combination of hardware innovation and incredible software design allows Apple Watch Series 5 to offer all-day 18-hour battery life.

Navigation

Updated location features on Apple Watch Series 5 provide customers with greater navigation tools to use throughout the day. The new built-in compass and updated Maps app allow users to see which way they are facing. With Apple Watch Series 5, customers can use the new Compass app to see heading, incline, latitude, longitude and current elevation. Users can even add one of three new Compass complications to their watch face to see direction at a glance.

International Emergency Calling

For added personal safety while traveling, users with cellular models of Apple Watch Series 5 can now complete international calls to emergency services, regardless of where the device was originally purchased or if the cellular plan has been activated. International emergency calling also works with fall detection, if enabled, to automatically place an emergency call if Apple Watch senses the user has taken a hard fall and remains motionless for about a minute.

watchOS 6

Additional health and fitness features come with watchOS 6, including the new Cycle Tracking app, which gives customers the ability to log important information related to their menstrual cycles, and see predicted timing for their next period and fertile windows using the convenience of Apple Watch.3 The Noise app helps users understand the ambient sound levels in environments such as concerts and sporting events that could negatively impact hearing, and Activity Trends on iPhone provides a long-term view of their activity patterns to help them understand their progress. watchOS 6 also brings dynamic new watch faces, including Meridian, Modular Compact and Solar Dial, which can be easily customized for quicker access to favorite apps.

Apple Watch Studio

For the first time, Apple Watch customers can enjoy a more personalized experience when purchasing Apple Watch Series 5 in Apple Stores, from apple.com and in the Apple Store app.4 Exclusively at Apple, the new Apple Watch Studio gives customers the opportunity to pick their preferred case and band combination to create a look that is uniquely their own.

Apple Watch Lineup

Apple is introducing a new case material made of titanium, a prized material in watchmaking that has superb strength-to-weight ratio and is lighter than stainless steel. Available in two beautiful brushed finishes, the natural titanium has a custom-engineered surface which helps maintain its color and resist staining, while the space black titanium achieves its deep color from a diamond-like coating (DLC).

Classic styles like the stainless steel case in gold, silver and space black remain, while the aluminum case in silver, gold and space gray is now made for the first time from 100 percent recycled 7000 series aluminum. This fall, the highly scratch-resistant and beautiful white ceramic case is also available, along with a new sport loop and a wide range of great new band colors, which work with any generation of Apple Watch.

La cat de mare a fost pasul de la Series 3 la Series 4, atat de mic este pasul de la 4 la 4.1...ma rog, 5.

Always on-u ala e interesant, dar sper ca se poate dezactiva.

Singura parte buna la toata treaba asta, este ca au scazut considerabil pretul la Series 3, care ar trebui sa fie maxim 1000 lei si este un ceas excelent (efectiv il port zi si noapte la mana de la lansare).

E bun compasul acela, e util... dar eu nu inteleg de ce pana mea nu se introduce in smartwatch-uri si ceva care eu consider ca e "must have": temperature reader. N-ar fi rau sa fie chiar 2 senzori, unul pt. skin, si altul pentru exterior... Well, poate la anul?

Oricum, o sa va rog sa postati aici ce descoperiti ca mai are nou Seria 5 (in afara de Titanium, Ceramic si alte nebunii de genul). Eu din cate am inteles va avea procesor mai rapid, spatiu dublu de stocare, compas si always on. And that's all! Dar eu tot sper ca de fapt sa vedem o baterie cu 50-100mAh mai mare...

Si eu ma tot intreb de ce nu au pus senzor de temperatura in ele. Mi se pare un must have.

Dar tu de ce vrei sa treci la Series 5? Nu ai 4?

Ba da. Dar as vrea better battery si always on. Extra speed la el ma lasa rece (deja e super fast, ba chiar eu as vrea sa aiba o optiune prin care sa-l trec eu in low performance or something, pentru a mai castiga baterie).

Guys, mai are careva probleme cu autonomia bateriei dupa ultimile update-uri?

Eu am un Series 3, fara cellular.

Pana in urma cu ~2 luni, ma tinea 2 zile lejer. Toate cele pornite, ceasu la mana non stop (mai putin cand fac dus sau cand e la incarcat), iar noaptea consuma cam 10-12% din baterie.

In schimb, de ~2 luni, ma tine cam 1 zi si putin, nici macar si jumatate.
Am testat aseara, cu update la zi facut in urma cu 1-2 zile, inchis toate aplicatiile, restart inainte sa-l pun la incarcat, l-am luat de la incarcat inainte sa ma bag in pat (~12 noaptea) cu 100%, iar dimineata cand m-am trezit mai aveam 64% iar acum mai am 38%, deci ajung acasa cu 20%...

Nu am series 3, dar pe mine 4 ma tine maxim o zi si jumatate. Nu am simtit o diferenta de la ultimele update-uri, si sincer... nici nu m-as mai chinui. Conteaza cum va fi dupa ce trecem la noul WatchOS. De acela imi e frica...

Eu cumva sper sa se rezolve problemele pentru Series 3, mai ales pentru ca inca-l tin la vanzare, deci inca se bazeaza pe el sa mearga bine.

Pana la urma s-a descoperit ca totusi noul Seria 5 are baterie cu 10% mai mare decat Seria 4. Probabil ca sa suplineasca extra power-ul necesar pentru consumul cu Always On. Si motivul pt. care Apple spune ca Seria 5 are acelasi runtime ca si Seria 4. Adica eficienta mai buna la procesor + 10% extra battery = acelasi consum ca si la Seria 4. Cu alte cuvinte, un Seria 5 ar trebui sa tina mai mult cu Always On dezactivat (asta era o intrebare la care pana acum nu a stiut nimeni sa raspunda). And now we know!

Parerea mea subiectiva, din pacate S5 tine mai putin ca S3 ... mult mai putin, daca S3-ul il luam de la incarcat de dimineata la prima ora si puteam sa-l port pana a 2-a zi seara (fara sa il incarc, sau sa-l scot de la mana) in conditiile mele de utilizare, S5 il pun la mana de dimineata iar seara treabuie sa-l pun la incarcat, da ... nu tine nici macar 24 ore (tine undeva la 15-16 ore), iar S3 as putea spune ca tine cam 36 ore*.

(*repet in conditiile mele de utilizare)

Nu stiu daca e de la Always on, de la skin-ul ales care e mult mai dinamic decat cel de pe s3, de la alte setari (de genul syncronizari mai dese cu telefonul, sau diferite aplicatii care isi fac update continuu in background) insa e cam groasa, o sa incerc sa "mimic" setarile 1 by 1 intre S3 si S5 pentru a intelege care e problema, si daca pot " replica " cele 36 ore in vreun fel.

Darkie, intai de toate... mai da-le un pic de timp. Ca vad ca scot update-uri pe banda rulanta (de-abia a iesit WatchOS 6.01 si deja vine 6.02).
Second, dezactiveaza Always On-ul. Desi Apple spunea ca tine la fel cu S4, eu am indoielile mele. Iar dn ce spuneai tu, al tau S3 tinea mai mult decat al meu S4. Deci teoretic mai mult si decat S5...

P.S. Al meu S4 vad ca tine mai bine de cand cu WatchOS 6.01. De exp. acum am Usage: 3 Hours, 34 Minutes, Standby: 1 Day, 6 Hours, si bateria imi indica 49%. Daca sare de 2 zile deja e S.F. (nu a tinut niciodata atat).

Astazi mi-am luat si eu apple watch 4 si l-am butonat toata ziua. Desi am facut research inainte de a il lua, ce nu am aflat de nicaieri este faptul ca daca aveti tatuaje full sleeve (in special cu o suprafata mai mare inchisa la culoare) nu il veti putea folosi cum trebuie. Ceasul va crede ca nu sta pe incheietura si va trebui sa introduceti pass code-ul de fiecare data cand vreti sa il utilizati. Tot imi cerea pass code-ul si nu stiam de ce, initial credeam ca e defect pana am gasit "apple watch and tattoos". Plin de topicuri, reddituri, etc.


E o problema bine cunoscuta, mentionata si de apple pe site "Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can also impact heart rate sensor performance. The ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings.".

Pe stanga nu il pot folosi, doar pe dreapta unde merge fara probleme. Iar daca dezactivati passcode-ul nu puteti folosi Apple pay sau alte feateruri. (stanga full sleeve, dreapta fara tatuaje)


Ma gandesc momentan daca sa il pastrez sau sa renunt la el, eu purtand de o viata ceasuri pe mana stanga.

La asta cu tatuajele chiar nu m-am gandit. Si aveam un feeling ca senzorii sunt mai mult de tip IR sau ceva... nicidecum lumina care nu poate trece prin cerneala.

Watch Faces and Sharing

Faces are central to the watch experience, providing customers with valuable information at a glance and the ability to personalize their Apple Watch. watchOS 7 offers new ways to discover and share unique combinations to completely configure the watch face to suit any activity or lifestyle, from the new parent to the surfing aficionado, tennis player, or photographer. Infinitely customizable and personalized faces, inclusive of complications, can be shared through Messages or Mail, and discovered through the App Store or even from links through websites and social media channels.

watchOS 7 offers updates to faces for more personalization and greater access to favorite apps. The beautifully detailed and ultraprecise Chronograph Pro includes a tachymeter to calculate speed based on time traveled over a fixed distance, the Photos face offers color filters, and the bold X-Large face now has an option to add a rich complication.

Developers now have the ability to offer more than one complication per app on a single watch face. For example, on one watch face, Glow Baby can display multiple complications that help new parents track bottle-feeding, breastfeeding, pumping statistics, and nap times, while Dawn Patrol can show surfers tide, wind speed, and water temperature from a favorite surf spot.

Sleep

With watchOS 7, Apple Watch introduces sleep tracking, taking a holistic approach to sleep by providing valuable tools to help users get the desired amount of sleep, get to bed on time, and create a pre-bedtime routine to meet their sleep goals. Through the detection of micro-movements from the watch’s accelerometer, which signals respiration during sleep, Apple Watch intelligently captures when the wearer is sleeping and how much sleep they get each night. In the morning, the wearer will see a visualization of their previous night’s sleep, including periods of wake and sleep. They will also see a chart showing their weekly sleep trend.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a bedtime routine helps the body prepare for sleep. To support this, Wind Down allows Apple Watch and iPhone users to create a customized routine before bed, including setting up a specific scene in the Home app, listening to a soothing soundscape, or using a favorite meditation app. In Sleep Mode, Apple Watch turns on Do Not Disturb and automatically darkens the screen overnight.
To help users wake up, Apple Watch offers a silent haptic alarm or gentle sounds, while the wake-up screen shows the current battery level. Depending on personal charging behavior, if the battery is too low within an hour of bedtime, Apple Watch will remind users to charge it ahead of sleep. Sleep data is encrypted on device or in iCloud with iCloud sync, and data is always in the user’s control.

Automatic Handwashing Detection

Washing hands properly for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of illness. In a first-of-its-kind innovation for a wearable, Apple Watch uses the motion sensors, microphone, and on-device machine learning to automatically detect handwashing motions and sounds. It then initiates a 20-second countdown timer, and if the user finishes early, they will be prompted to keep washing. Apple Watch can also conveniently remind the user to wash their hands when they return home.
The Health app on iPhone will show frequency and duration of the user’s handwashing, as well as information on the importance of handwashing, as it relates to overall health. Sounds used to detect handwashing are not automatically recorded or saved by the Health app or Apple Watch.

Workout Types and Fitness App

The Workout app is one of the most popular apps on Apple Watch, and watchOS 7 brings four exciting new workout types supported by powerful heart rate and custom-built motion algorithms: Core Training, Dance, Functional Strength Training, and Cooldown.
To correctly capture calorie exertion for Dance, Apple Watch uses advanced sensor fusion, combining data from the heart rate sensor and inputs from the accelerometer and gyroscope, that accounts for the unique challenges of measuring different body-to-arm motions typical with dance. This workout type was validated and tested with four of the most popular dance styles for exercise: Bollywood, cardio dance, hip-hop, and Latin.

The redesigned Activity app on iPhone, now called Fitness, provides a streamlined view of data including daily Activity, Workouts, Awards, and Activity Trends on one tab, and Activity Sharing and Activity Competitions on another.

Hearing

Following the introduction of the Noise app in watchOS 6 that measures ambient sound levels and duration of exposure, watchOS 7 adds further support for hearing health with headphone audio notifications. Customers can now understand how loudly they are listening to media through their headphones using their iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple Watch, and when these levels may impact hearing over time.
When total listening with headphones has reached 100 percent of the safe weekly listening amount, Apple Watch provides a notification to the wearer. This amount is based on World Health Organization recommendations that, for instance, a person can be exposed to 80 decibels for about 40 hours per week without an impact to hearing abilities. Customers can also see how long they have been exposed to high decibel levels each week in the Health app on iPhone and can control the maximum level for headphone volume. No audio from the headphone audio notification feature is recorded or saved by the Health app or Apple Watch.

Additional watchOS 7 Updates

For optimal convenience while biking, cycling directions are available right on the wrist. Directions are large and easy to read, and Maps can direct when to dismount and walk the bike, or take the stairs to save time. The wearer can choose a route that avoids steep hills, gets to the destination the quickest, or takes the most direct path.
Customers can now use Siri to translate many languages conveniently from the wrist, dictation is handled on device with the power of the Apple Neural Engine for faster and more reliable processing when dictating messages and more, and Apple Watch now supports Announce Messages with Siri. The Shortcuts app is also now available on Apple Watch and can be accessed as a complication.
Developers can create graphic complications with SwiftUI, and new developer tools such as Xcode Previews make building them even easier.
New complications for native features include: Camera Remote, Sleep, and Shortcuts.
New Mobility Metrics available in the Health app include: low-range cardio fitness, walking speed, stair-descent speed, stair-ascent speed, six-minute walk distance, double support time, step length, and asymmetry. These metrics are important for the clinical community to monitor patients’ ability to move safely and easily as they age. Typically only measured in a lab setting, these metrics can be uniquely measured by Apple Watch and iPhone, and used by developers, such as Zimmer Biomet, a musculoskeletal healthcare company, in patient care and in management tools such as mymobility.

Privacy

Privacy is fundamental to Apple and particularly important when it comes to health data, so all health features are designed with privacy in mind. Health data is encrypted on device or in iCloud with iCloud sync, and data is always in the user’s control.

Availability

The developer beta of watchOS 7 is available to Apple Developer Program members at developer.apple.com starting today. For the first time, a public beta will be available to watchOS users next month at beta.apple.com. watchOS 7 will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, or Apple Watch Series 5 paired with iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14 or later. Blood Oxygen Sensor and App

Apple Watch Series 6 expands the health capabilities of previous Apple Watch models with a new feature that conveniently measures the oxygen saturation of the user’s blood, so they can better understand their overall fitness and wellness. Oxygen saturation, or SpO2, represents the percentage of oxygen being carried by red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body, and indicates how well this oxygenated blood is being delivered throughout the body.

To compensate for natural variations in the skin and improve accuracy, the Blood Oxygen sensor employs four clusters of green, red, and infrared LEDs, along with the four photodiodes on the back crystal of Apple Watch, to measure light reflected back from blood. Apple Watch then uses an advanced custom algorithm built into the Blood Oxygen app, which is designed to measure blood oxygen between 70 percent and 100 percent. On-demand measurements can be taken while the user is still, and periodic background measurements occur when they are inactive, including during sleep. All data will be visible in the Health app, and the user will be able to track trends over time to see how their blood oxygen level changes.

Apple is joining forces with researchers to conduct three health studies that include using Apple Watch to explore how blood oxygen levels can be used in future health applications. This year, Apple will collaborate with the University of California, Irvine, and Anthem to examine how longitudinal measurements of blood oxygen and other physiological signals can help manage and control asthma.

Separately, Apple will work closely with investigators at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at the University Health Network, one of the largest health research organizations in North America, to better understand how blood oxygen measurements and other Apple Watch metrics can help with management of heart failure. Finally, investigators with the Seattle Flu Study at the Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine and faculty from the University of Washington School of Medicine will seek to learn how signals from apps on Apple Watch, such as Heart Rate and Blood Oxygen, could serve as early signs of respiratory conditions like influenza and COVID-19.

Design and Performance

Apple Watch Series 6 improves performance through redesigned hardware that packs even more features and power into the same impressively small design. Using a new dual-core processor based on A13 Bionic in iPhone 11, the upgraded S6 SiP runs up to 20 percent faster, allowing apps to also launch 20 percent faster, while maintaining the same all-day 18-hour battery life.² Additionally, Apple Watch Series 6 features the U1 chip and Ultra Wideband antennas,³ which will enable short-range wireless location to support new experiences, such as next-generation digital car keys. Apple Watch Series 6 offers faster charging, completing a full charge in under 1.5 hours, and improved battery life for tracking certain workouts, such as indoor and outdoor runs.

An enhanced Always-On Retina display on Apple Watch Series 6 is up to 2.5 times brighter than Apple Watch Series 5 outdoors when the user’s wrist is down, making it much easier to see a watch face in bright sunlight. When their wrist is down, the user can also now access Notification Center and Control Center, tap on complications, and swipe to change faces without having to wake their watch screen.

Always-On Altimeter

The always-on altimeter provides real-time elevation all day long by using a new, more power-efficient barometric altimeter, along with GPS and nearby Wi-Fi networks. This feature allows for the detection of small elevation changes above ground level, up and down to the measurement of 1 foot, and can be shown as a new watch face complication or workout metric.

Apple Watch Collection

This fall, customers have more choices than ever with stunning new cases and bands to suit every style preference. Using a custom recommendation engine, Fitness+ considers previously completed workouts and intelligently suggests new options that match the workouts users select most often, or something fresh to balance their current routine. Customers can also use an intuitive filtering tool to choose what is most important to them when looking for a workout, whether it’s the workout type, the trainer, the duration, or the music. For Apple Music subscribers, favorite music from Fitness+ workouts can also be easily saved and listened to later, whether in a workout or otherwise.

When a workout is selected and started on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, the correct workout type will automatically start on Apple Watch. During the session, the metrics from Apple Watch are shown on the screen and come to life for moments of inspiration. For example, when the trainer says to check heart rate or begins a countdown timer, those numbers will animate on the screen. Users can combine the use of Scribble, dictation, and emoji all within the same message, and for dictated messages, they have the option to edit the presented text. To easily add even more expression to a message, users can simply enter a word or phrase and select from hundreds of trending GIFs.
watchOS 8 also brings the Contacts app to Apple Watch, providing a simple way for users to browse, add, and edit contacts, and share contacts directly from the app.

Focus

watchOS 8 supports Focus, a powerful set of tools available in iOS 15 to help users reduce distraction and be in the moment. Apple Watch will automatically align with any Focus set on iOS, so that notifications from people and apps are filtered based on what a user is currently doing. Focus uses on-device intelligence to make suggestions based on usage patterns — for example, when starting a workout on Apple Watch, the Focus for fitness is suggested.

Additional watchOS 8 Updates

- Multiple timers come to Apple Watch and can be given a specific label using Siri (such as “Laundry Timer” or “Cooking Timer”).
- In watchOS 8, more Apple Watch apps support the Always-On display, including Maps, Mindfulness, Now Playing, Phone, Podcasts, Stopwatch, Timers, Voice Memos, and others. watchOS 8 is also making it easier for developers to keep their apps timely and relevant with a new Always-On API for third-party apps.
- To support Apple Watch users with upper-body limb differences, AssistiveTouch enables one-arm usage of Apple Watch by sensing simple hand gestures to interact without touching the display. Using the built-in motion sensors, users can answer incoming calls, control an onscreen motion pointer, and surface an action menu that can access Notification Center, Control Center, and more.
- A new Find Items app on Apple Watch helps users locate tagged items using the Find My network, and a new Find Devices app helps users locate lost Apple devices that are signed in with the same Apple ID.
- The redesigned Music app enables users to share songs, albums, and playlists through Messages and Mail, and enjoy music and radio all in one place.
- The Weather app now supports Severe Weather notifications, displaying government alerts about certain severe weather events. The app also delivers Next Hour precipitation alerts and offers updated complications.
- Family Setup introduces the ability to add transit cards from Hong Kong, Japan, and select China mainland and US cities, and Calendar and Mail now include the option to add a Google account.
- Apple Fitness+, the first fitness service created entirely around Apple Watch, expands its offering in watchOS 8 with Picture in Picture support and new filtering options, and users can stop and resume an in-progress workout on any device. Later this month, Fitness+ introduces a new series of workouts featuring Jeanette Jenkins, one of the most sought-after fitness experts, and a new Artist Spotlight Series with workouts featuring entire playlists from Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Alicia Keys.

Privacy

Apple believes privacy is a fundamental human right. Since privacy is particularly important for Health and identification, Health data is encrypted on device or in iCloud with iCloud sync. For identification, Identity Cards in Wallet are encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element, the same hardware technology used to keep Apple Pay private and secure. Apple cannot see when or where digital IDs are presented when using a driver’s license or state ID.

1. Digital car keys require a participating car manufacturer and will be coming later this year.
2. Support for new keys in Apple Wallet requires a compatible door lock for homes, offices, and hotels that will be available through third parties.
