The only way to upgrade to this subscription is by using your credit or debit card. Which means, due to Microsoft policies, that SURE the first month of Gold will only cost $1.00. HOWEVER, you had better mark that 30-Days from now on your calendar, because after the your 1-Month runs up (at 12 AM), Microsoft will AUTOMATICALLY bill your card for a SECOND MONTH at the full price value of $8 and change. The only way to avoid this is by canceling your subscription BEFORE the 1-Month has expired. Now, you would think it would be as easy as going onto the Xbox 360 website and pressing a button labeled CANCEL. But no, that's impossible, you HAVE to call 1-800-4MY-XBOX, telling about five different people that you want to cancel your account, followed by waiting on hold (for no reason) for anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes before finally being able to get your subscription canceled. So is it worth it go through all that for most likely 27 days of a Xbox 360 Gold Membership? I would say it probably is. In fact, I just did it myself. How about you, will you be signing up? Or is the headache of being made to jump through hoops just to NOT be forced to pay $8.00, just too much for you to deal with?
