The Last Guardian Uncovers Full Potential of the PS3's Hardware | PlayStation LifeStyle

When was the last time we heard the PlayStation 3 was at its full potential? It seems that every time a developer doubts the PlayStation 3′s limit, another developer spits out fire with games like God of War III and Killzone 3. But can Team ICO’s The Last Guardian truly be the last line of the PS3′s graphical progression?
When asked about the potential for 3D support, Fumito Ueda replied with both positive and negative news to Official PlayStation Magazine UK. Fumito said the following:

“The game will support 3D but it depends on how much the PS3 has left.”

He followed up by stating:

“…in terms of machine power, I have to say we are quite at the very limit.”

The Last Guardian has shown itself as fully capable of upping the bar for visuals, and Team ICO is nothing short of extremely talented. The title is supposed to release later this year, and we’ll see just how far the cell has been pushed when it arrives.

No Fumito Ueda at E3

Lots of super star developers will be attending E3 next month. Here's one super star amongst super stars who won't be attending: Fumito Ueda.

The head of Team ICO said at Twitter today that he won't be attending the show. E3 will be held in LA starting June 7.

This news causes some concern about the possibility of no new revelations on The Last Guardian, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. All three titles were delayed last month.

Of course, it is possible that Sony will promote the games without Ueda's presence, so fans shouldn't lose all hope.

It’s been quite a wait for Team ICO’s The Last Guardian, and the development cycle clearly hasn’t been easy for Sony and co. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to have to keep waiting for details throughout the rest of 2011. That is if Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is to be believed (which he kind of is).

“The Last Guardian team has been making progress,” the Sony exec said in an interview with VG247. “It’s been very difficult in terms of seeing the progress: not as fast as we’d been hoping for, and the team has been under big pressure. But we’re still making progress, so I’d like to continue to support and keep waiting for great news sometime in the future.”

When asked if we could hear about the game at TGS this year, Yoshida replied: “I’d say it could be a little bit longer.”

Bummer. Well we’ll keep on waiting patiently, because everyone knows that this one should be something special.

Fumito Ueda says The Last Guardian to be "Unpredictable" | Nightmare Mode

He says about the game, �As much as possible, the level design shouldn�t seem too functional or rational. It has to seem like a natural part of the atmosphere and the world, like it�s been like that forever. Obviously we need to do the level design, but we don�t want our users to notice the intent of the designer� I think that�s what we�re spending most of our time on right now. I think being unpredictable, giving the game unpredictability, is key for The Last Guardian. Just by their presence alone, the AI characters tend to invite unpredictable situations. That was on purpose.�

Sony Santa Monica Enlisted To Help With The Last Guardian - News - www.GameInformer.com

The Last Guardian has had a rocky development period, but Sony says that internal studios like Sony Santa Monica are helping on the game.
In an interview with Wired, worldwide studio head Shuhei Yoshida admitted that the rumors of The Last Guardian developer Team Ico calling in for help are true. "Well, you know, it’s not just Santa Monica," said Yoshida. "We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the US and the UK, so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the US and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice."
Yoshida also reiterated that creative director Fumito Ueda is still very much involved in the development of the project, despite the fact that he's decided to leave the studio after the game is complete. According to Yoshida, the game is playable, but not to the point where Sony is comfortable issuing a release date.

The Last Guardian was conspicuously absent from Sony's E3 press conference on Monday evening - early Tuesday morning UK time.
Why wasn't the long-awaited PS3 exclusive there? Because The Last Guardian is still having "technical difficulties", Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer today at E3.
"The team is back in Tokyo is working hard, and there are some technical difficulties that the team is focused on right now," he told us. "That's why we don't have an update."
Problems with The Last Guardian project became apparent when the game's designer, Fumito Ueda, left Sony in December last year.
Since then, we've heard that the game's making "slow progress", and that Sony UK and Sony US are helping Sony Japan build the game.
One theory for the game's prolonged absence is that The Last Guardian will no longer be a PS3 game, and instead be ported to PlayStation 4.
But Shuhei Yoshida seemed to reject this claim.
"What does that question mean [is it still a PS3 game]? It is a PS3 game," he stressed.
Is there a danger it will never see the light of day - will it still actually come out on PS3?
"When we have confidence in saying that, we will talk about it," he answered. "But today, we are working through some engineering effort."
