What games will be available at launch?

The Atari VCS will ship with the Atari Vault of more than 100 arcade and home classics.

What is PC Mode?

“PC Mode” opens up the full PC architecture of the Atari VCS so users can install a 2nd OS like Windows, Ubuntu or Chrome, and use apps like Steam (etc.) to play AAA games, retro emulators and essentially have a full PC to do anything you want.

When do I get my stuff?

If you preorder from AtariVCS.com or any of our retail partners, expected ship dates start in Fall 2020.

If you preordered on Indiegogo.com, we plan to start shipping products in Fall 2020.

Atari has announced the creation of a dedicated gaming division, as well as a change of leadership at the company.

Atari is one of the most recognisable names from the early games industry. Since its 80s heyday, the company name has lived on through various owners, most recently emerging from a 2013 bankruptcy into its current form.

For a company that, seven years ago, had just 10 employees, it’s taking on some fairly ambitious projects. In recent years the company has announced plans to launch a cryptocurrency, licensed its name for a chain of hotels, and crowdfunded the Atari VCS retro console.

On Tuesday, the company announced it would be restructuring its operation into two separate divisions: Atari Gaming and Atari Blockchain. In addition, current CEO Frédéric Chesnais will step down to focus on the Blockchain business, replaced by Chairman of the Board Wade J. Rosen.

Atari’s Gaming Division will focus on retro gaming, the company said, specifically through mobile games, the VCS console and licensing.

Atari will continue to operate and develop free-to-play mobile games, it said. In addition, new development will be shifted to console and PC, with an emphasis on “revitalizing classic Atari intellectual property for the modern era”.

It said: “These new releases will share the classics’ instant enjoyability, while introducing a meaningful single-player campaign, couch co-op/multiplayer, and online play.”

On the VCS console, which has already shipped to Indiegogo backers and will go on sale publicly in “Spring 2021”, Atari said it would continue to support the console through “meaningful” third-party content and exclusive first-party content.

It also said it would release tools that will give creators the ability to “design their own classic Atari games,” beginning with the Atari 2600, with an eventual goal of “making it easier to create, share and play retro gaming content in the modern era”.


Finally, Atari said it would continue to license its IPs for both gaming and non-gaming fields, such as hotels and casinos. Recently, the company licensed Atari related brands for use in NFTs.

On its Blockchain Division, the company said it would focus on “the immense possibilities of crypto and blockchain-enabled games.” This includes the ability for users to use Atari Tokens to purchase digital goods on VCS.

First released on the Atari ST in 1991, D/Generation has been remastered for the Atari VCS by West Coast Software in time for the title’s 30th Anniversary. Not only is the game returning to its roots, but the game was set 30 years in the future … in 2021!

D/Generation is a cyberpunk action-adventure game loaded with puzzle elements you need to solve in order to progress. It is one of those games that generates hours of fun as you dodge robot sentries and laser defenses while you carefully explore your surroundings, looking for clues to solve intricate puzzles and progress to the next challenge.

West Coast Software has faithfully ported the original title for the anniversary edition immensely popular isometric puzzle game. Whether you are replaying the game for the first time in decades, or playing for the first time, it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and give you some challenging, enjoyable gameplay.

In the near future, a company called Genoq has developed a range of bioweapons that have escaped into the company’s headquarters. Your character is a jetpack courier that has to deliver an important package to Genoq’s leading researcher, Derrida, and is oblivious to the danger until the doors lock behind him. He has to fight his way through ten floors of grenade turrets, electrified panels, laser fences and all the mutant bioweapons to deliver his package and find out how to escape. On the way to the top, he will meet survivors of the attack and will need to communicate with them to find clues and rescue them for extra lives.

Of course, that is exactly what a courier’s job is like in 2021!

D/Generation is one of many retro titles from the last 30 years that will be coming to the Atari VCS in 2021, along with a number of re-interpreted retro-classics, and retro-inspired indie games. If you are a retro fan, you are in for a treat.

D/Generation returns to Atari for it’s 30th Anniversary

The Atari VCS console will release on June 15, 2021 in the United States, the company has confirmed.

It will be available to purchase from Best Buy, GameStop, Micro Center and the official Atari VCS website, with each retailer offering unique launch-day promotions, according to Atari.

The Atari VCS Onyx Base system is priced at $299.99, while Atari VCS Black Walnut and Onyx All-In system bundles include the Classic Joystick (available separately for $59.99) and Modern Controller (also $59.99) for $399.99.

The new VCS was first available via an Indiegogo campaign, with around 11,000 backers having recently received their consoles.

The console consists of an AMD Ryzen embedded R1606G system-on-a-chip, with a Radeon Vega GPU.

AMD claims the SOC has enough power to be able to decode and run 4K videos at 60 frames per second, but when VGC reviewed the console in March, it had yet to prove itself capable of this.

The console comes with Atari VCS Vault built-in. This boasts 100 retro Atari games, “but be warned”, Chris Scullion wrote in VGC’s Atari VCS review, “that means 18 arcade games and 82 Atari 2600 games, many of which are so incredibly basic that they really don’t hold up to the mildest scrutiny in 2021”.

The VCS also provides bespoke apps for Airconsole, an ‘online video game console’ service where players enter a code on their mobile phone and use that as a controller for a selection of games, and Antstream Arcade, an official streaming service for over 1,000 retro games covering the likes of the Amiga, C64, ZX Spectrum, NES, SNES, Mega Drive and arcade.

VGC’s Atari VCS review, which was published in March, concluded: “Ultimately at this stage the VCS is a curious little device that looks the part and offers impressive compatibility with a variety of peripherals, but doesn’t really boast anything truly unique that should have people eagerly opening their wallets”.
