Payday 2 no longer a digital-exclusive - GameSpot.com

Payday 2 will launch this August globally at retail for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, developer Overkill Software announced today. Previously, the game was confirmed for a digital-only release on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC.

"We have a bit of a problem here at Overkill--there are just too many great ideas and none that we were really happy to throw out--so Payday 2 has become just too big to reserve release on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network alone," game director David Goldfarb said in a statement.

The PC version of Payday 2 will remain a digital-exclusive and will be available through Steam.

Payday 2 includes a number of features not found in 2011's original Payday: The Heist, including a skill and progression system. In addition, the game features four different professions, each with its own unique abilities.

• Hotline Miami 2 is Coming to Payday 2 as a DLC Mission

Hotline Miami 2 is set to grace Payday 2 later this month, thanks to a collaborative deal inked out between Dennaton Games and Overkill Software. The studios today announced that the heist-themed cooperative multiplayer shooter Payday 2 will be set to get a Hotline Miami DLC update.

• Payday 2 Introduces Microtransactions, And Fans Aren't Happy

Payday 2’s annual Crimefest has started, and the players are up in arms. Unlike before, however, their sight aren’t aimed at each other in-game, but towards Overkill Software, everywhere that the word is out; microtransactions are now part of the game.
As a review, since 2011, developer Overkill Software promised that there would be no microtransactions in the game at all. This was the arrangement their captive user base was happy with, and this presumably means most, if not all, of their players preferred to buy the game full price over a microtransactions based model.
Fast forward to today, and Crimefest has launched safes as announced earlier. What has scandalized players because they did not see it coming, however, is that the unique drills needed to open the safes would be sold on the Steam Market. These safes contain said weapon skins, which rounds up why fans are upset.
