Grand Theft Auto Developer Talks About Open World Games

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has talked about open world games, seeing as how he and his team have masterminded some of the most successful titles in the genre, and where the industry is going in the next 10 years.

When you talk about open world games, Rockstar is the benchmark, as its recent titles, from Grand Theft Auto IV to Red Dead Redemption or even L.A. Noire have impressed through their great design and the detail with which their open worlds were crafted.

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser believes that game designers have barely scratched the surface in terms of what's actually possible to render in an interactive experience.

"I think there's something really interesting in the open world experience. Obviously we've made like ten of them now and they still don't feel boring to me. It still feels that we're only scratching the surface of that potential. But who knows what we'll be doing?" Houser said to IGN.

When talking about the future of Rockstar and the gaming industry as a whole, Houser confirms that the only goal is to make interesting and cool games, no matter if they're Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead, Max Payne or even Table Tennis.

"We'll hopefully have done a bunch of interesting games in the next ten years. That's always the goal. I've never been that good at the futureology side of game-making. We never really care what the name is on the box, either. The name Grand Theft Auto, the name Max Payne, the name's Red Dead, the name's Table Tennis, it doesn't really matter as long as the game's cool," he said.

"I would never have believed you would have been talking about this in ten years time. We were still talking about Space Invaders [ten years ago], and that was already 20, 30 years old then. Hopefully we'll continue to do interesting stuff, that's you know, that's kind of all you can hope for."

Rockstar has quite a few projects in the works, like the upcoming L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition on the PC that arrives this November, Max Payne 3 in March, 2012, and, of course, the oft-rumored Grand Theft Auto V.
