AMD’s “heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access” coming this year in Kaveri | Ars Technica

Even with the integration of GPUs and CPUs into the same chip, GPGPU is quite awkward for software developers. The CPU and GPU have their own pools of memory. Physically, these might use the same chips on the motherboard (as most integrated GPUs carve off a portion of system memory for their own purposes). From a software perspective, however, these are completely separate.

This means that whenever a CPU program wants to do some computation on the GPU, it has to copy all the data from the CPU's memory into the GPU's memory. When the GPU computation is finished, all the data has to be copied back. This need to copy back and forth wastes time and makes it difficult to mix and match code that runs on the CPU and code that runs on the GPU.

The need to copy data also means that the GPU can't use the same data structures that the CPU is using. While the exact terminology varies from programming language to programming language, CPU data structures make extensive use of pointers: essentially, memory addresses that refer (or, indeed, point) to other pieces of data. These structures can't simply be copied into GPU memory, because CPU pointers refer to locations in CPU memory. Since GPU memory is separate, these locations would be all wrong when copied.

hUMA is the way AMD proposes to solve this problem. With hUMA, the CPU and GPU share a single memory space. The GPU can directly access CPU memory addresses, allowing it to both read and write data that the CPU is also reading and writing.

hUMA is a cache coherent system, meaning that the CPU and GPU will always see a consistent view of data in memory. If one processor makes a change then the other processor will see that changed data, even if the old value was being cached.

PS4 European/UK release date delay explained by Sony -- PlayStation Universe

Sony has told Digital Spy the reason why the PlayStation 4 will be launching in Europe two weeks after it hits the U.S.

At the Sony press conference at GamesCom this week, we learned that the PS3 will be released on November 15 in North America and November 29 in Europe. Speaking to Digital Spy, UK managing director Fergal Cera said that the slight delay is due to production.

"It's simply round production, in which there's a finite factory output, so it's easier to phase it and therefore have healthy volumes in both regions,” he said. “Put the initial slug into the US, and then it gives us an opportunity to catch up and have extra production ready for the European launch date."

Even then it looks like Europeans will struggle to get their hands on a PS4 at launch with UK retailers no longer guaranteeing release day deliveries.

Deci pana la urma diferenta dintre puterea PS4-lui si a Xbox One e mai mare decat credeam.
De-abia astept sa vad niste comparatii intre jocurile multiplatform.

    Hands-on with Battlefield 4 on PS4 at gamescom 2013 – PlayStation.Blog.Europe

For starters, the game runs at fluid 60 fps and its benefits were instantly noticeable on PS4. This translates to a decidedly smoother, much more responsive feel compared to Battlefield 3 on PS3. The speedy framerate means that the game simply controls better, whether you’re quickly sweeping your aiming reticule to ward off a surprise close-range attack or making smaller aiming adjustments to nail a precise headshot. Sprinting and vaulting over low cover also feels much more responsive and gives you an edge in the game’s sprawling battle zones, where death lurks around every corner and peers out of every window.
    Cool .

PS4 is a return to the spirit of the early PlayStation days, says the man who built it | The Verge

Verge: There's a lot of indie developer love at Sony, but you don't seem to have as much of a focus on exclusive titles as Microsoft. Is that perception accurate?

Cerny: I believe an underappreciated aspect of what's going on is that PlayStation 4 is the world's most powerful games console, and I think that is going to become increasingly apparent as time goes by. Even if titles are multi-platform, if the game experience is more responsive or more visually attractive on a certain platform, it definitely does play into the overall success.

PS4 huMA architecture: AMD retracts statement, 'will not comment' on PS4 vs. Xbox One -- PlayStation Universe

Yesterday, we reported that an AMD employee had given details to a German IT magazine about PlayStation 4's hUMA (Heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access) architecture, which allows data to be simultaneously shared between GPU and CPU. AMD's Marc Diana called it "a game changer," and the magazine itself gave a serious advantage to PS4 over Xbox One in 3D performance.

Now, AMD is retracting its statement--it seems someone may have forgot about corporate policy of silence.

In a statement to PSU, AMD spokesperson Michael Silverman said:

"During a recent gamescom 2013 interview, an AMD spokesperson made inaccurate statements regarding the details of our semi-custom APU architectures. AMD will not comment on the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PS4 memory architectures and will not speak for Microsoft, Sony or other AMD customers."

While AMD vaguely calls its previous statements "inaccurate," we're tempted to think this is a tongue-slip that outs a key architectural difference between PS4 and Xbox One.

Sony on PS4 pre-order shortage: "We are looking at a sell-out situation, which is a good problem to have" | PS4 News | Official PlayStation Magazine

When asked about the situation Gara replied: “The problem with pre-orders, which is a good problem to have, is that they’re very, very high. Higher than we’ve ever seen in 20 years in this business”. Because of this he says Sony has, “a situation to manage” with PS4, adding, “as an ex retailer myself I understand this at least as well as anyone else: we need to help retailers manage the expectations of their customers and not let them down. And that is why we advise them that, from August the 5th, they should not guarantee anyone they will get their unit on day one”.

According to Gara, “we are going to be looking at a sell-out situation and chasing demand, it’s a problem, it’s kind of a good problem to have, but it is a problem and we’re trying to manage that as responsibly as we possibly can”.

That process of management is currently underway says Gara, “now [we] have the dates logged on”. Next will be to “start the nitty gritty conversations with retailers about exactly how many units they’re going to get, so they may be able to satisfy some of the second [post pre-order] list on day one, or not”.
