Who is Gozer...really?
First, it might be interesting to note that in hebrew, roughly translated Gozer mean's "surgeon who circumsizes".
In the Movie Gozer is portrayed as a fictional Sumerian god but "in the real Sumerian religion, the deity's true name is Tiamat, but had to be changed to the unique Gozer for the silm because of copyright issues with the makers of Dungeons and Dragons. " (paleorama.com, march 16th)
Tiamat, in the Sumerian religion Tiamat "is primeval Chaos, bearer of the skies, and the earth and mother of Lahmu and Lahamu" (Siren, Christopher, 2000). From this, we can draw some parrallels with Tiamat and Gozer. Tiamat is Chaos, and we know that Gozer brings Chaos and destruction. Tiamat is bearer of the skies, and Gozer was summoned from the rooftop of a high-rise apartment building. Tiamat is also the mother of Lahmu and Lahamu, when Gozer is "mother" to Zuul and Vins Clortho, two demi-god minions.
