Battlefield 3 Commander was a hot topic at DICE
Many (us included) are disappointed by the lack of a Commander feature in Battlefield 3. The Commander was a groundbreaking addition to Battlefield 2, and set the game apart from many other shooters, adding another layer to the gameplay. DICE has previously explained why the Commander feature was removed in Battlefield 3: only one player could play as Commander, and they preferred to �lower the threshold� and allow all players to use assets like the UAV. Ironically, in Bad Company 2, only one player could use the UAV, compared to two Commanders in BF2.
Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo, DICE�s Karl Magnus-Troedsson said that the Commander was a �hot topic� at the studio, with some developers in favor of it and other against. He said:
Troedsson made another, more interesting argument against the Commander feature, saying:�When the dev team sat down and thought about this, the Commander role was a very important and hot topic in the studio I have to say. Some people wanted us to implement it in the absolute same way as we had before; some of us wanted us to reinvigorate how we do it.
I don�t know how many people have tried to play as a Commander in Battlefield 2, but it�s kind of a strange experience. Everyone agrees that that actual role of the Commander is very, very cool. But the problem is that only one person per team could play it, and it was always the highest ranking one�
We disagree with DICE�s reasoning for removing the Commander � Commanders helped the team greatly by providing supplies, by using the UAV, by calling in the artillery, by spotting players. The Commander was never supposed to fight, and in fact, most BF2 players hated a �fighting� Commander. The Commander was basically playing an RTS � a game within a game � and being a Commander was never boring, you had to work hard for your team. Someone was always willing to play the role, and the team with a Commander was far better off then a team without one.�They [Commanders] basically spent the whole match lying on the ground on some obscure corner of the map, hoping not to get knifed in the back and trying to support people�
Honestly, we�re still taken aback by DICE occlusion of the Commander feature, and their reasoning behind it.
Battlefield 3 squad leaders can call in artillery strikes
Artillery strikes were last seen in 2006′s Battlefield 2142, where the Commander could call in an artillery strike anywhere on the map. Since there�s no Commander in Battlefield 3, DICE has instead trickled down many of the Commander features to the regular soldier: the UAV is now available to everyone (if UAV stations return), and there will be an unlockable UAV for the Engineer class.
Not only that, according to DICE�s Karl-Magnus Troedsson at the recent Eurogamer Expo, squad leader will have the ability to call in artillery strikes. This is in addition to the unlockable mortar strike, which is available to everyone playing the Engineer class.
While we were disappointed with the lack of a Commander in Battlefield 3, it�s good to see DICE keep many of the assets and spread them out to the squad level.

A lot of folks are reporting that they still haven’t received their beta keys — which isn’t a surprise, since the beta won’t be starting for another 5 or so hours at the earliest (5 AM PST). According to DICE (via Twitter), beta keys will be sent out around 1PM to 3PM, CET (Central European Time) — roughly 3-5 hours from now. Here’s a run down when beta keys will be sent out in your local time:
US Pacific time: 4 AM – 6 AM
US Eastern time: 7 AM – 9 AM
Europe: 1 PM – 3 PM
Australia (AEST): 9 PM – 11 PM
Japan: 8 PM -11 PM JST
Note that the above times are for PC and Xbox 360 beta, the PlayStation 3 version still remains uncertain.
We’ve also got confirmation that the beta weighs in at 3.9 GB. This could cause a great deal of stress on EA’s servers, which makes sense why beta key giveaways are spread out by a few hours.

Azi dimineata la 9 nu era nimic. Dar din cate stiu eu, cel putin Store-ul din USA isi face up-date abia spre seara(pt cei care au MoH zona 1). Si cum beta o sa aiba vre-o 4GB si la inceput toata lumea o sa fie calare, tare mi-e frica ca o sa-l jucam abia maine.

Confirm. E si pe UK dar daca nu ati avut MOH Limited Edition ci varianta normala din cauza unei toante de la Gameshop, o sa va spuna ca nu puteti downloada clientul.
Super tare zgomotu.Cum isi face exercitiul la high-G.
L-am si jucat, avand MoH LE. Judecand pe baza de beta, jocul e intre mediocru si bun. Grafica nu mi se pare mult schimbata fata de BC2, culorile parca sunt totusi mai aprinse. Armele se aud de parca toate au silencers. Abilitatea de prone e oribila date fiind portiunile mari de harta, la care se adauga vegetatia si intunericul din primele doua baze din Operation Metro. Prcatic de abia vezi inamicii. Reculul la unele arme (AK47, de ex) mi s-a parut exagerat de mare. Ritmul de joc - dupa cum era de asteptat, lent. Oamenii care terminau primii in echipele lor aveau in jur de 25-30 fraguri facute, cele doua meciuri de rush jucate de mine tinand peste 25 minute fiecare. Am tras cu RPG-ul in cateva cladiri din ultima baza si, desi sareau bucati din pereti, acestia ramaneau intacti.
Principalul plus pe care i-l dau e ca intr-o ora de joc nu am avut niciun freeze.
Serverele cum suporta? Ceva lag, disconnect uri?
Nu am intalnit niciuna, nici alta. Totusi tine cont ca l-am luat in jurul orei 12 dimineata, cred ca de abia aparuse si nu multi il descarcasera. Vedem si diseara cum se comporta, cand se mai aglomereaza.
In closed beta o sa fie mai bine , la open o sa fie inghesuiala .
Daca e moca , e bun .
Downshifting PC / PS3 / Xbox360 ?
iar HUD-ul mi se pare o imbunatatire majora
