Editorial: Five Reasons the PlayStation Move Will Dominate This Holiday Season
Sony’s motion-sensitive PlayStation Move control system is now less than two months away, set to attack retail on September 17th. Although there are tons of other games coming out between that time and the Christmas season, we have very little doubt that Sony will make a fortune with its motion technology. Why, you ask? Well, we have five reasons to believe in that theory.
Holding something makes a difference. (That's what she said!)
1. You’re actually holding something. A big problem with the Kinect is that you don’t really feel like you’re physically holding something as you play. It’s a big deal to play a driving game without actually holding a steering wheel, for instance. With the PlayStation Move, you hold the Move controller in one hand and either a second controller or Navigational controller in the other. This really makes a difference, as you feel the physical weight and girth of the object, which incorporates better into gaming that invisible ones. Golf games, for example. You’d feel better off holding a controller like a driver handle than just trying to grip one that isn’t there, right? We would, anyway. And, sure, it looks silly with the little glowing golf ball on top, but if it reads our motions better, we’re all for it.
2. It’ll work with games that are already out. Another problem with the Kinect is that it isn’t compatible with other Microsoft games. You can’t use it to shine your flashlight in Alan Wake, nor can you wave your arms like crazy with Guitar Hero. The PlayStation Move, on the other hand, will support a few games that are already on shelves, including Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, Heavy Rain and Resident Evil 5 (well, the Gold Edition, anyway). This is a big deal for players who can’t afford to buy a brand spanking new game after dropping $100 or so on the PlayStation Move set-up.
Driving with a PlayStation Move? Better than you might expect.
3. New games will support it. The Kinect may have its fair share of games, but some of Microsoft’s bigger releases simply won’t support it. Halo Reach? Not happening. Meanwhile, on the Sony front, most (if not all) of Sony’s first-party software will feature Move support of some kind. It’s optional, so you don’t have to take that route if you don’t want to, but it’s nice to have that all the same. Games like LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3, SOCOM 4, Gran Turismo 5 (our favorite, obviously) and more will support the motion controllers right out of the box. And that’s on top of the games already made for the device, such as Kung Fu Rider and Sports Champions. Now that’s dedication to a product.
4. There’s something for everyone. Part of the reason many people don’t care for the Wii is because it’s a “family” system, and there aren’t enough hardcore games to go around. The PlayStation Move’s library seems to have something for everyone, from teenage shoot-em-up fans (The Shoot) to people who adore virtual pets (EyePet) to arcade thrill seekers (Time Crisis: Razing Storm) to sports enthusiasts (Sports Champions) to fighting fans (The Fight). And yes, there’s family fare too, and most of it is looking better than what you might’ve gotten use to on the Wii. That’s something to smile about, don’t you think?
Sports Champions has everything from ping pong to gladiatorial combat. In the same game!
5. A price for everyone. If you go with the Kinect, you’re stuck buying it one of two ways. Either you can get the device for $150 or plunk down $300 on a system bundle with a dinky 4 GB hard drive. With the PlayStation Move, your options are nearly endless. Buy the controller by itself for $60, add a secondary controller for $40, buy a PS3 Eye, Move and game bundle for $100, buy two different system bundles between $350-$400, and so on. There are multiple options here, instead of limitations telling you that you can go with this or you can go with that. Those options really do make a difference, especially to those without a system – or on a budget.
Sony details UK PlayStation Move pricing
Sony has lifted the lid on its UK pricing strategy for PlayStation Move, in addition to shedding more light on the Starter Pack that will be released alongside the new peripheral.
The platform holder confirmed that punters can expect to pay 34.99 for the Motion Controller itself, while the Sub Controller will set you back 24.99. PlayStation Eye, meanwhile, will retail for 24.99.
As for the Starter Pack, it’ll cost 49.99 and includes the Motion Controller, PS Eye and a starter disc. The contents for the disc are as follows:
Sports Champions
Start the Party!
The Shoot
EyePet: Move Edition
TV Superstars
Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 (English only)
echochrome ii (PSN title)
Tumble (PSN title)
Beat Sketchers (PSN title)
Elsewhere, Sony also revealed that gamers can utilize the DualShock 3 instead of the Sub Controller in order to play Move-compatible games.
PlayStation Move releases in the UK on September 15.
Inteleg eu bine? No way, the shoot, sport champions, start the party vor fi full retail games la pretu de 24.85 (vezi shopto.net) de lire.
Move Starter Disc Detailed, PS3 News - GamerZines : Free Digital Games Magazines
Starter Packul din US merita, deoarece are jocul Sports Champions in locul acelui disc cu demouri.
Cant wait, Resident 5 on the Move, inca 1 luna jumate![]()
PushSquare: Sports Champions on PlayStation 3 Hands-On Impressions
Admittedly, Sports Champions has about as much charm as a limp sock. But having got hands-on time with the compilation’s table tennis game, we’re not sure it matters. That’s because PlayStation Move works; this is not a device playing on empty promises and faked lifestyle commercials – it does what Sony have always said it will: track your movements 1:1.
Sports Champions is Sony’s attempt at creating a Wii Sports-esque compilation package for their upcoming motion controller, PlayStation Move. It includes a range of activities including volleyball, disc golf and archery. Our hands-on time was limited to table tennis, but we came away from the game suitably impressed.
As already touched upon, Sports Champions is not an artistic master-piece. While the game looks sharp and colourful, the graphical style is weak, opting for a more realistic design compared to other titles of its kind. It ends up looking drab and predictable, despite the cheerful colouring.
Going into the demo we were quite concerned with the way the game looks, but our issues seemed to fade away as we sank into the gameplay. There’s a short calibration period before the game begins, in which you’ll need to hold the Move controller in three positions. This syncs your standing position and arm length to the PlayStation Eye. You’re then dropped into the game.
The first thing we tested was just how well the PlayStation Move could track our paddle. The game adopts a first-person viewpoint when you’re serving or rallying, so the only thing you’ll see in your area of the screen is the bat you’ll use to hit the ball. It’s almost startling how well the PlayStation Move is able to track movements. We twisted, lunged and waved our arms around; every action was perfectly mapped to the screen without any distinguishable lag.
That accuracy transcends into the gameplay. Playing the game feels like real table tennis. We tried a number of shot-types (performing them with similar movements to real-life) — lobs, slices, volleys could all be performed with intuitive actions. What’s more, there was never the impression that the PlayStation Move was losing sync. As we entered a lengthy deuce with our opponent, the PlayStation Move was still tracking our movements with the same life-like accuracy we had experienced at the start of the demo.
There’s some spoofing applied to the ball, but we assumed this was due to the “Bronze” difficulty level we played on. While we were unable to try for ourselves, we’re presuming the “Gold” difficulty level gives you absolute control over the physics of the ball.
Based on what we played, we’d buy Sports Champions for the table tennis mode alone. Assuming the other games on the compilation are as accurate, we think this is going to be the Move’s must-have title. It’s disappointing that the art-style doesn’t live up to the gameplay – but honestly, your connection with the design fades away as soon as the game begins.
Here Come The Stupid PlayStation Move Accessories!
With the PlayStation Move being essentially a Wii Remote for the PS3, it was only a matter of time before the stupid accessories crowd jumped from Nintendo’s console to Sony’s. Here’s one of the first examples: CTA Digital’s PlayStation Move gloves, which are… gloves with velcro straps to secure a PlayStation Move controller to. So, you know… you don’t… get sweat on them? Look unprepared at a PS3 UFC cosplay get-together?
Just remember: these may look stupid, but in six months time – or longer if the Move really takes off – they’ll be just the tip of a very stupid iceberg.

Sony kick-starts Move marketing, Uses hot women for attention
AsiaticeEvery company uses models or actors to help convey their upcoming product. How the company does this varies greatly. Nintendo used happy, ordinary looking people for most of their early Wii advertisements, and this helped it gain a lot of appeal to the family-oriented crowd. Since the Wii's launch, Nintendo has shifted that focus much, but they have used famous singers and actresses to help push their 'Touch Generation' line towards housewives and casual female gamers. As you can tell with the success of the Wii and DS, the marketing campaign has worked extremely well.
To get people excited and perked up about PlayStation Move, Sony recently held an event in Taiwan and they used some bountiful beauties to get the Move some desired attention. Demoing games like Resident Evil 5 and some Sony published Move titles, the event appears to be a success and the lovely models certainly helped out. With PlayStation Move only a month away from release, these types of demonstrations and marketing tools will certainly peak interest in Move as the release nears.
Below, you'll find over a dozen photos from the event, which showcase the demos and, of course, the models. PlayStation Move will release in early September in North America. Stay tuned for more coverage on Move later this month.
