Recent speculation claims 2021’s Call of Duty will be an Advanced Warfare sequel set in World War 3. The unsubstantiated rumor came from a Reddit post claiming to know a leak about the game. It's worth noting that Sledgehammer Games was the developer behind Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
Coincidentally, that rumor was shut down by the same person who made all the speculation mentioned above. When asked about the rumor’s validity, Tom Henderson simply said “No.” While that’s not a nail in the coffin, Henderson is a credible insider, so his confident denial is telling.
Since then, two more rumors have popped up. A known Call of Duty leaker recently teased a return to World War II in the next game. When a Twitter user responded to see if he meant World War III, he doubled down, tweeting "WW2." Confident, though not necessarily the strongest evidence considering that Call of Duty: World War 2 came out just a few years ago.
Call of Duty leak source Modern Warzone says that the next game will be set in the 1950s. That's led to speculation that the next game could be set in the Korean War, which started in June 1950. It's a setting that hasn't been explored much by gaming, so it would certainly make sense considering the franchise's desire to hop around history. Between these three rumors, it wouldn't be surprising if one turns out to be true, even if by accident.
