Tools to Find Focus

Customers can set their device to help them be in the moment by creating a custom Focus or selecting a suggested Focus, which uses on-device intelligence to suggest which people and apps are allowed to notify them. Focus suggestions are based on users’ context, like during their work hours or while they’re winding down for bed, and when Focus is set on one Apple device, it automatically applies to their other Apple devices. Users can create Home Screen pages with apps and widgets that apply to moments of focus to only display relevant apps and reduce temptation. When a user’s Focus is blocking incoming notifications, their status is automatically displayed to others in Messages, reflecting that a user is not currently reachable.

New Notifications Experience

Notifications have been redesigned, adding contact photos for people and larger icons for apps that make them even easier to identify. To help reduce distraction, a new notification summary collects non-time-critical notifications for delivery at a more opportune time, such as in the morning and evening. Using on-device intelligence, notifications are arranged by priority, with the most relevant notifications rising to the top, and based on a user’s interactions with apps. Explore the World with Apple Maps

Apple is committed to building the world’s best map, and iOS 15 takes Maps even further with brand new ways to navigate and explore. Users will experience significantly enhanced details in cities for neighborhoods, commercial districts, elevation, and buildings, new road colors and labels, custom-designed landmarks, and a new night-time mode with a moonlit glow. This is a whole new way of looking at the world through Maps.

New Keys and State IDs Come to Apple Wallet

This year, digital car keys get even better with support for Ultra Wideband technology, so users can securely unlock and start their supported vehicle without removing their iPhone from a pocket or bag.⁵ iPhone can also be used to unlock a user’s home, office, or even a hotel room — all through keys stored in Wallet.⁶

Later this year, customers in participating states in the US will be able to add their driver’s license or state IDs to Wallet. The Transportation Security Administration is working to enable airport security checkpoints as the first place customers can use their digital Identity Card in Wallet. Identity Cards in Wallet are encrypted and safely stored in the Secure Element, the same hardware technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure.

New Privacy Features

iOS 15 introduces even more privacy controls to help protect user information. With on-device speech recognition, audio of Siri requests is now processed entirely on iPhone by default,⁷ and performance improves significantly. Mail Privacy Protection stops senders from learning whether an email has been opened, and hides IP addresses so senders can’t learn a user’s location or use it to build a profile on them. App Privacy Report offers an overview of how apps use the access that has been granted to location, photos, camera, microphone, and contacts in the last seven days, and which other domains are contacted.⁸

Redesigned Weather and Notes Apps

Weather includes more graphical displays of weather data, full-screen maps, and dynamic layouts that change based on conditions. Beautifully redesigned animated backgrounds more accurately reflect the sun’s position and precipitation, and notifications highlight when rain or snow starts and stops.

Notes adds user-created tags that make it easy to quickly categorize notes, and mentions allow members of shared notes to notify one another of important updates. An all-new Activity view shows the recent history of a shared note.

“This innovative new technology allows Apple to provide valuable and actionable information to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and law enforcement regarding the proliferation of known CSAM [child sexual abuse material],” the company said.

“And it does so while providing significant privacy benefits over existing techniques since Apple only learns about users’ photos if they have a collection of known CSAM in their iCloud Photos account.”

The proposals are Apple’s attempt to find a compromise between its own promise to protect customers’ privacy and demands from governments, law enforcement agencies and child safety campaigners for more assistance in criminal investigations, including terrorism and child pornography.

The tension between tech companies such as Apple and Facebook, which have defended their increasing use of encryption in their products and services, and law enforcement has only intensified since the iPhone maker went to court with the FBI in 2016 over access to a terror suspect’s iPhone following a shooting in San Bernardino, California.

Security researchers, while supportive of efforts to combat child abuse, are concerned that Apple risks enabling governments around the world to seek access to their citizens’ personal data, potentially far beyond its original intent.

“It is an absolutely appalling idea, because it is going to lead to distributed bulk surveillance of . . . our phones and laptops,” said Ross Anderson, professor of security engineering at the University of Cambridge.

Although the system is currently trained to spot child sex abuse, it could be adapted to scan for any other targeted imagery and text, for instance, terror beheadings or anti-government signs at protests, say researchers. Apple’s precedent could also increase pressure on other tech companies to use similar techniques.

“This will break the dam — governments will demand it from everyone,” said Matthew Green, a security professor at Johns Hopkins University, who is believed to be the first researcher to post a tweet about the issue.

Alec Muffett, a security researcher and privacy campaigner who formerly worked at Facebook and Deliveroo, said Apple’s move was “tectonic” and a “huge and regressive step for individual privacy”.

“Apple are walking back privacy to enable 1984,” he said.

Cloud-based photo storage systems and social networking sites already scan for child abuse imagery, but that process becomes more complex when trying to access data stored on a personal device.

Apple’s system is less invasive in that the screening is done on the phone, and “only if there is a match is notification sent back to those searching”, said Alan Woodward, a computer security professor at the University of Surrey. “This decentralised approach is about the best approach you could adopt if you do go down this route.”

Apple’s neuralMatch algorithm will continuously scan photos that are stored on a US user’s iPhone and have also been uploaded to its iCloud back-up system. Users’ photos, converted into a string of numbers through a process known as “hashing”, will be compared with those on a database of known images of child sexual abuse.

The system has been trained on 200,000 sex abuse images collected by the NCMEC.

According to people briefed on the plans, every photo uploaded to iCloud in the US will be given a “safety voucher” saying whether it is suspect or not. Once a certain number of photos are marked as suspect, Apple will enable all the suspect photos to be decrypted and, if apparently illegal, passed on to the relevant authorities.

"Messages uses on-device machine learning to analyze image attachments and determine if a photo is sexually explicit. The feature is designed so that Apple does not get access to the messages," a technical document explaining Apple's new features reads. Apple said in the document that the new feature "will enable parents to play a more informed role in helping their children navigate communication online."

The document adds that this image scanning can be applied to images both received and sent by a child. After receiving a suspected sexually explicit image, the iPhone will blur the photo itself and the child will be warned that the image could be sensitive to view, according to screenshots included in the document. The system can also notify the child's parents if the child decides to view the image, as well as if the child tries to send sexually explicit images themselves, the document adds.

The document says this change is coming in an update later this year to accounts set up as families in iCloud for iOS15, iPad OS15, and macOS Monterey.

The move has concerned some security experts.

"Obviously the application presented is a good thing. But this is still an incredibly powerful technology demonstration, showing that even end to end encrypted photos can be subject to sophisticated scanning," Matthew Green, who teaches cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, told Motherboard in an online chat. "This scanning is benign, and when a picture is detected only the parent of the affected individual will be notified. But it shows that Apple is willing to build and deploy this technology. I hope that they will never be asked to use it for other purposes."

An oft-repeated concern from cryptographers and technologists is that tools developed for one purpose may be redeployed or tweaked for something else entirely. Although not directly comparable, in 2016 Reuters reported that Yahoo scanned incoming emails for specific information provided by U.S. intelligence officials; tech giants have scanned content stored in cloud services for known child abuse material for years.

Worries about Apple's new features first rose on Wednesday when Green tweeted some details about another of Apple's plans that will compare the fingerprint of images to a list of already known child abuse material. The Financial Times then reported some specifics of the planned feature, but did not report on the Messages app scanning in detail.

Nicholas Weaver, senior researcher at the International Computer Science Institute at UC Berkeley, told Motherboard in an online chat that Apple's new Messages feature "seems like a VERY good idea."

"Overall Apple's approach seems well thought through to be effective while maximizing privacy," he added.

Apple did not respond to a specific set of questions about the Messages scanning feature.

Will Cathcart, noting Apple's plans said that he was "concerned" by Apple's recently announced plans to scan photos uploaded to iCloud Photos for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), matching the hashes of photos to a known database of CSAM images provided by the NCMEC and other organizations that protect children.

Cathcart says Apple's plan is "the wrong approach and a setback for people's privacy all over the world," he further noted that people were asking if WhatsApp would adopt this system for WhatsApp, he said no.

Cathcart noted some of WhatsApp's own work in the sector and said that Apple "has long needed to do more to fight CSAM", however, criticized Apple's approach, which was announced earlier this week, stating:

Instead of focusing on making it easy for people to report content that's shared with them, Apple has built software that can scan all the private photos on your phone -- even photos you haven't shared with anyone. That's not privacy.

Cathcart described the plan as "an Apple-built and operated surveillance system that could very easily be used to scan private content for anything they or a government decides it wants to control." Cathcart also claimed that "countries, where iPhones are sold, will have different definitions on what is acceptable." Cathcart noted concerns about how the system could be used in China, and what might be considered illegal there.

Apple has confirmed to iMore that Cathcart's comments miss some of the key facts regarding its new system. Cathcart states that Apple "has built software that can scan all the private photos on your phone -- even photos you haven't shared with anyone." Apple denies this and says that its system can only detect CSAM images in iCloud Photos and that if a user turns off iCloud Photos that it simply won't work. It also can't detect any images that aren't known CSAM images, as noted by one of the project's technical validators:

Cathcart further argued that "this is an Apple-built and operated surveillance system that could very easily be used to scan private content for anything they or a government decides it wants to control." As per the details of the announcement, Apple says that the CSAM image hashes come from the NCMEC, as well as other child safety organizations, not Apple, and that nowhere in the process can Apple add anything to the set of hashes it is given. As the unreadable hash list will be part of the operating system, every device has the same set of hashes. Furthermore, Apple refuted Cathcart's concern about other countries where iPhones are sold, stating that there's no way to modify or change the system for any specific region or device.

Salut. Am și eu o problemă și sunt curios dacă o pot rezolva acasă fără a fi nevoit să merg la un service.

Am un iPhone 5s căruia i s-a spart ecranul/display-ul în urmă cu vreo 2 ani și de atunci stă în sertar. Se aprindea în continuare doar că nu puteam să disting meniul. Este posibil să recuperez fotografiile și videoclipurile de pe el fără să îl duc la un service și fără să îi schimb display-ul? Nu le-am avut stocate în cloud și nici nu l-am avut vreodată conectat prin iTunes, nici măcar parola de la contul apple nu o mai știu.

Nu prea ... chiar daca nu ai cod de ecran tot trebuie sa-i dai Allow sa fie accesat de PC . Mergi la un service de cartier, unii mai au display-uri sparte pe care le folosesc pentru proba .

Pentru mine, ca posesor (multumit as spune) de 12 Pro Max, ma asteptam ca 13 Pro Max sa nu-mi faca cu ochiul. Dar, dupa conferinta, am zis asa: La naiba... faster CPU & GPU, better camera's (now with macro & 2.2x more light on the main sensor), faster & more storage (1TB), surgical grade stainless steel, ceramic shield, Cinematic mode, Photographic Styles (I wanted this so bad), ProRes, Dolby Vision & Smart HDR 4 (UpTo 1200 nits), ProMotion 120Hz adaptive display, smaller notch (FaceID area), bigger battery (2,5 more hours vs 12 Pro Max), more 5G bands... What's not to like? iPhone 13 Pro Max, wait for me!

P.S. Nu ar fi stricat și un TouchID în butonul de Power, cum au pus la noul iPad Mini (care btw e genial)... Dar nu le putem avea pe toate. Vând 12 Pro Max! Sau rinichi...

Fiecare stie daca-si permite sau nu sa faca acest upgrade anual. In fiecare an e putin mai bun decat anteriorul, dar cel putin in cazul meu, inca nu vad un motiv pentru care as schimba X-ul actual - poate doar macro sau form factor-ul de la 12, care seamana mult mai mult cu iPhone 4 care era preferatul meu.

In rest, arunca niste termeni care chiar nu conteaza (gen surgical grade stainless steel sau ceramic shield) si functii pe care marea majoritatea nu le vor folosi vreodata (gen filmarea 4K 60 HDR si cu Dolby Vision, cand majoritatea display-urilor normale nu au HDR si clar nu sunt DV).

Eu nu inteleg cum naiba am ajuns de la no camera bump la camera bump pe 3 niveluri @-) mi se pare absolut horror :-&

Eu cred ca o sa trec la noul Iphone. I-a trecut timpul XS-ului meu.

Sunt in dilema daca sa iau PRO sau PRO MAX. Nu stiu daca m-as impaca cu un telefon foarte mare.

Oricum, sunt sictirit de conferinta de aseara. Ma dezgusta prezentarile astea bombastice gen “cel mai…”. Serios? Ce dracu este asa de inovativ si de wow fata de anul trecut? Noul mod de filmare cinema? :)

Pe dracu’, daca o iau la puricat, ce este inovativ fata de XS-ul meu? O camera mai buna? Un CPU/GPU mai bune? Nu fac poze/filmari si nu ma joc…

Despre baterie, nu mai vorbim. Este in continuare execrabila.

Doar nevoia de “nou”, ma face sa cumpar. Un moft!

JohnnyUSA: eu nu inteleg. Daca te-a sictirit conferinta, daca te dezgusta prezentarile stil Apple (asa au fost dintotdeauna), daca nu ti se pare nimic inovativ, nu faci poze, nu faci filmari, nu te joci, bateria e execrabila... de ce Dzeu mai iti cumperi un nou iPhone? Esti masochist?

Cat despre baterie, eu sunt extrem de multumit de 12 Pro Max (actually is one of the best), iar bigger battery la 13 Pro Max nu are cum sa strice. Also, eu sunt socat de faptul ca acesta este primul meu telefon (12 Pro Max-ul), care dupa un an de folosire are 100% battery health. Practic il vand ca nou! :evil:

razvanrazy: eu nu m-am referit la nimeni altcineva, daca sa-si faca upgrade sau nu, decat la mine. Cat despre faptul ca tie nu-ti pasa despre ceramic shield sau surgical grade stainless steel, mi se pare si normal, daca inca esti pe iPhone X. Insa mie imi pasa, pentru ca eu cand vand telefonul, vreau sa arate CA NOU. Iar chestiile astea anti-scratches, better coating & stuff like that, chiar fac diferenta. Anul trecut cel caruia i-am dat telefonul (cu cutie si absolut toate accesoriile neatinse - i hate white thingies anyway), a zis ca l-a luat si l-a verificat pe toate partile, dupa care m-a intrebat "auzi, asta sigur nu e nou nout? Tu chiar l-ai folosit un an?". Si atentie, eu nu folosesc FOLIE (le urasc), ba chiar trebuie tinut cont ca stau la tara, si nu ma sfiesc sa iau telefonul cu mine pe la muncile "agricole"... Valabil si la Apple Watch, unde eu inca ma mir ca am zero scratches. Mai ales ca la Apple Watch, chiar am simtit pe pielea mea ce super lovituri si-a luat, sau cum am zgariat cu diverse ecranul din neatentie.

Cat despre HDR, e bine ca avem 10.000 de discutii pe forum despre cum sa activam HDR-ul si avantajele sale, dupa care ne intrebam la ce mama naibii are rost sa filmam cu HDR... Cu ProRes-ul nu stiu cum e, dar banuiesc ca daca chiar vrei sa filmezi cinematic mode in 4K, nu prea ai ce face cu 128GB. Nici nu vreau sa ma gandesc ce dimensiuni au filmelele acelea (care aproape sigur sunt de fapt cel putin 3 filmari simultane, cu toate camerele. Plus extra depth infos, LiDAR and stuff). Eu oricum anul acesta imi iau de 512GB, nu mai ma cacai cu 256...

Cu camera bump, sunt de acord. Nici mie nu-mi place la ce turnulete au ajuns. Dar stii ce? Imi iubesc atat de mult back coverul de piele, incat si daca ar fi fost zero camera bumps, eu tot i-as pune husa lor originala de piele. Cu care, acele bumps sunt fix zero. Ba chiar camerele sunt mai jos decat marginea husei, pentru o protectie mai buna. So... B-)
