As Sony’s gut-wrenching decision to kill physical games in 2028 begins to settle, sadness is starting to seep in.

Billy Basso, the maker of acclaimed indie Animal Well, has taken the news particularly hard. His game was brilliantly promoted by PlayStation, but he says releasing a physical version of the title was a “huge motivator” for him.

“Extremely sad to think I’ll never release another physical game for PlayStation. Releasing the physical versions of Animal Well was a huge motivator all throughout development. It really kills my desire to develop for the platform. I’m hoping they reverse this decision.”

PlayStation has suddenly told its audience to brace themselves for an entirely physical media-free future. The news comes just days after the company unapologetically informed users it was about to permanently delete more than 550 Studio Canal-distributed movies from the PlayStation Network – and literally remove them from the accounts of any customer who previously purchased them.

It’s honestly one of the baffling corporate failures to read the room since Microsoft handed Don Mattrick a microphone and allowed him to discuss how the Xbox One probably wasn’t going to suit someone serving on a nuclear submarine. That is, PlayStation is following up a brazenly anti-consumer rugpull of digital content with fresh confirmation that ALL PlayStation content from 2028 onwards will be exclusively digital.

The timing would be hilarious if it wasn’t so appallingly offensive.

However, the facts are in, and the standard has been set: you cannot trust digital purchases, and you cannot trust the corporations that offer them.

After Sony announced it would end physical disc production in early 2028, it risks more lawsuits. The PlayStation Store is the only place to purchase digital PS5 games. Without retailers selling boxed copies, plaintiffs could argue that the marketplace is a monopoly.

Singurul lucru la care nu s-au gândit este că vor fi dați în judecată pentru că PS Store este singurul loc de unde vor putea fi cumpărate jocuri de PS5. Asta înseamnă că ar putea fi obligați să permită utilizarea de magazine third party. Sunt tare curios cum va evolua situația.

Faptul că unii dezvoltatori ar putea fi demotivați să mai facă jocuri este un lucru minor. Până la urmă vrei să faci bani, faci doar joc digital. E de apreciat faptul că unii văd lansarea de jocuri fizice un lucru bun, dar cred că pentru Sony nu va conta prea mult așa ceva.

Eu cred ca SONY ca si companie nu are mai multi Matici care sa ruineze totul cu o singura lansare. Cu siguranta ca vor oferi alternative si cred ca vor face un damage management destul de capabil.

Pana una alta, toata situatia asta cu 'no disc' pare ca un fel de 'operatiune speciala' care sa deturneze atentia de la faptul ca PSN este complet distrus de mai bine de 2 saptamani. Oamenii (me included) raporteaza ca nu mai primesc update la Time Played, unora le dispar jocuri din lista, altii pierd trofee castigate cu ani in urma, etc... iar astazi inteleg ca au facut nenorocirea si mai mare cu noul hotfix update.

Nu cred ca sunt in stare sa faca pic de damage management - si nici nu cred ca au de ce, cu atatia fanboys care le accepta orice si sar la gatul oricui este impotriva produsului lor de suflet.

Gandeste-te doar la stirea din ultimile zile, despre filmele deja cumparate de utilizator, care vor fi sterse definitiv, fara niciun refund - o alta companie, probabil ajungea in faliment instant. Aici nu s-a rasculat nimeni.

Dacă te referi la magazine fizice, practic se vând cutii cu coduri, care sunt tot un fel de jocuri fizice. Cred că vor opri vânzarea de jocuri sub forma asta, asta e și ideea mișcării lor.. Dar ar putea fi și scăparea lor dacă vor permite doar vânzarea de Code In a Box din 2028.
