Forza Motorsport 3 Hands-On
Despite featuring pretty graphics and hundreds of fancy sports cars, we normally avoid racing simulators because they expose our weak driving skills. Forced to drive realistically on real world courses, it only takes us a few minutes before we spin out of control and crash into a wall. Not so with Forza Motorsport 3. Microsoft's Gran Turismo killer can test even the most seasoned digital driver, but for us newcomers, developer Turn 10 Studios included assists that put us in control of the exotic muscle cars instead of the other way around.
In our brief time with the game, we test drove the gorgeous Audi R8. Now before we enabled the driving assists, we attempted to win a race without any help. That, as expected, was a disaster. While the car controlled well, we had issues jumping from last to first. Of course, hitting other vehicles and clipping a wall never equals success.
Those driving assists, however, helped us tremendously. First, the Autobrake automatically slows the car down whenever it approaches a corner. In addition, an on-screen racing line shows where you'll need to position the car to have the best possible chance to win, and the line goes from green (floor it) to red (brake) to indicate the optimal speed. There's also a rewind feature (similar to the one in Race Driver: GRID) that allows you to reverse the clock by up to 10 seconds to have another go at one of multiple screw-ups; there's no limit to how many times you can use this.
Here's where things got especially interesting. In older racing games, using rewind wouldn't have a dramatic effect on what occurs ahead of your car. If, for example, the first and second place cars collide, rewind would only give you the opportunity to avoid the crash. Thanks to Forza's dynamic artificial intelligence, however, the same crash may not take place. We saw this in action, as we made a sharp turn and immediately slammed into an accident involving three cars. Instead of choking on our exhaust, we rewound the race a few seconds, came around that same corner and found an open straightaway. The accident never happened. As a result, we caught up to those cars and won the race, barely edging out a speedy Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.
In retrospect, Forza Motorsport 3 isn't the first game to have driver assists, but the combination of them sets it apart from the competition. And while they do make things easier, you don't have to use them; simply toggle them on/off before a race.
As for the actual racing, we haven't had this much fun with a sim in years. All of the cars take damage (as they do in Forza Motorsport 2), you can flip cars over, each one handles differently and a new in cockpit view gives you an up close look at your ride's interior, despite obscuring most of the race. While the game isn't as photorealistic as Gran Turismo on PS3, it's still gorgeous. The Audi R8, in particular, features stunning detail and real time reflections; races run at a blistering 60 frames per second with no slowdown.
Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to mess with the much-anticipated video editor or the enjoyable painting feature, but the demo made a lasting impression. Forza Motorsport 3 arrives October 26th and we can't wait to enjoy the full experience, two discs and all. Expect more tire shredding coverage in the near future.

Foarte interesant mi se pare insa asta "Thanks to Forza's dynamic artificial intelligence, however, the same crash may not take place.", avand in vedere ca butonul de rewind (o tampenie, imo) are cateva secunde de re-play.
Simple as that.
